The celebrations that bring Livadi together, season after season

Where Community Comes Alive

Throughout the year, Livadi village marks the passage of seasons with events and festivals that have been celebrated for generations. These gatherings are not staged for visitors — they are the authentic expression of a community that still finds its rhythm in the old calendar of saints' days, harvests, and the cycles of mountain life.

For guests of Lanari Traditional Guesthouse, attending a Livadi event is an opportunity to step inside the living culture of Mount Olympus — to share food with neighbours, hear traditional music beneath the stars, and experience the warmth of a village that opens its arms to anyone willing to join the celebration.

The Summer Panigiri

The panigiri is the crown jewel of Livadi's calendar. Held each summer on the village saint's feast day, this open-air celebration draws families from across the region back to the mountain. Long tables are set in the square beneath the ancient plane tree, laden with slow-roasted lamb, freshly baked bread, village salads, and endless carafes of local wine and tsipouro.

As evening falls, musicians take up their instruments — clarinet, violin, and drum — and the square fills with dancers moving to the steps passed down from their grandparents. The panigiri lasts well into the night, a joyful assertion that the old ways still have life in them.

Seasonal Gatherings

Beyond the panigiri, Livadi marks the year with quieter but equally meaningful gatherings. In autumn, the village comes together for the grape harvest and the first pressing of tsipouro — an occasion marked by tasting, storytelling, and laughter. The communal distillation is a social event as much as a practical one, with neighbours sharing the work and the spirit alike.

Winter brings the Christmas and Epiphany celebrations, when the village church fills with candlelight and the square resonates with the singing of carols. Spring arrives with Easter — the most sacred and communal of Greek celebrations — when Livadi's families gather for the midnight service, the cracking of red eggs, and the slow-roasted lamb that follows on Sunday.

Cultural Events on the Mountain

In recent years, Livadi has become a gathering point for cultural events that celebrate the heritage of the Olympus region. Occasional exhibitions of local craftsmanship, evenings of folk music and storytelling, and guided walks through the historical sites of the village offer deeper encounters with the culture of the mountain.

These events are organised by the village community and local cultural associations, often in collaboration with Lanari Traditional Guesthouse. They serve as a bridge between the past and the present, inviting both locals and visitors to engage with the traditions, arts, and natural heritage of this remarkable place.

The Village Year

1 January — Μπαμπαλιούρια

New Year's Day opens with the bell-wearers — men dressed in heavy livestock bells parading through the village. An old shepherd tradition, loud enough to wake the mountain.

Cheese Sunday — Φανοί

Before Lent, huge bonfires (fanoí) are lit around the village. People dance in a circle around them, exchanging satirical verses — the loudest, most teasing night of the year.

June & July — Saints' Feasts

The feasts of the Holy Spirit and Prophet Elias are kept with traditional panigíria at the village churches and at the high chapel of Prophet Elias above the village.

15 August — Panagia Festival

The peak of the year. The Panagia panigíri is when the Livadi diaspora returns — theatre, open-air concerts, long table of village food. The square doesn't sleep for a week.

“We happened to visit during the village panigiri and it was the most memorable night of our trip. Dancing with the locals, eating incredible food under the stars — this is the real Greece.”
